Rekey vs. Replace Locks: Which Do You Need?

Both stop old keys from working, but they are not the same. Here is how to choose.

Last updated: October 11, 2026

Quick answer: Rekey when your locks are in good shape and you just need new keys. Replace when the hardware is damaged, very old or low quality, or when you want an upgrade like a stronger deadbolt or a keypad.

What is rekeying?

Rekeying changes the pins inside a lock so a new key works and the old key does not. The lock stays on the door.

What is replacing?

Replacing removes the lock and installs a new one. You can choose a different style, a higher security grade, or a keypad or smart lock.

Rekey when

  • The locks work well and look good
  • You moved in or lost a key and only need new keys
  • You want all doors on one key
  • You want to keep costs down

Replace when

  • The lock is worn, loose, damaged or sticky
  • It is a low-grade lock that you want to upgrade
  • You want a keypad or smart lock
  • The finish or style no longer matches your door

FAQ

Common questions

Does rekeying make my lock more secure?

It controls who has working keys. It does not change the lock quality. If you want a stronger lock, replace it with a higher grade.

Can you rekey and replace in the same visit?

Yes. Tell us what you have and we will quote the whole job.
